“Can we use AI for this?” A student asking that question might mean checking spelling, getting ideas, or having a tool write the answer. A reply such as “Only for brainstorming” can leave plenty of room for guessing.
Take a reading response that asks students to explain why a character changes their mind. Asking AI for three possible reasons could count as brainstorming to a student. To the teacher, those reasons are the answer the student was supposed to work out.
Before students start, add a short note to the assignment that names the help they can use and the work they need to do themselves. A few concrete sentences can give them a clearer answer than “Use AI responsibly.”
Decide what students need to work out
For the reading response, the teacher wants students to develop an interpretation and support it with details from the story. If AI supplies the interpretation and picks the evidence, the finished paragraph will not tell the teacher whether the student understood the story. Putting that answer into different words does not solve the problem.
That gives the teacher a reason for a specific limit: students need to choose their answer, find the supporting details, and explain the connection themselves. The same question helps with a lab report or a math problem: what is the student supposed to work out?
If spelling is not the focus of this reading task, the teacher might allow a tool to flag spelling errors after students have written a draft. If spelling is what students are practicing, that permission would need to change. The assignment helps explain the choice.
Give students wording they can follow
If your school permits student AI use for proofreading, the reading-response note could say:
For this response, choose your answer and the story details yourself. Write your explanation in your own words.
After you finish a draft, you may use our approved tool to flag spelling and punctuation errors. Do not use AI to suggest an answer, choose evidence, or write or rewrite sentences.
You can use our editing checklist and a dictionary instead. Keep using any learning supports we’ve agreed on.
Replace “our approved tool” with its name and the way students can access it. If AI is not allowed for the assignment, use a shorter note:
Choose your answer and story details yourself, and write your own explanation. Do not use AI to create or edit this response. Use our editing checklist and a dictionary to check your work. Keep using any learning supports we’ve agreed on.
“Flag a spelling error” is different from “Make this paragraph sound better,” which could change the student’s explanation. Apply the same limit to AI features inside writing apps as to separate chatbots, while preserving students’ agreed learning supports.
Check that students understand the answer
Before they begin, ask students what the note allows. Could they use AI to suggest a reason the character changes their mind? Could it rewrite an awkward sentence? In this example, both answers are no. If students read the wording differently, that is a chance to clarify it before they do the work.
If you ask students to describe their AI use, keep the request brief: “I used the approved tool to check spelling and corrected two words.” Collecting a draft may help with a particular task, but it need not become an extra requirement on every assignment. Neither a draft nor a use note proves how the work was completed.
Before offering an AI option, check that the tool is approved for your students’ ages and available to them. Provide an alternative that needs no new personal account or purchase. Follow school rules for what work may be entered into a tool, and keep names and private information out.
The free AI Use on This Assignment PDF has wording to adapt and a student help note. If you want a separate lesson on checking AI claims, Check This AI Answer includes a ready-to-use activity that needs no student AI account. Both are in the Free Library.
Try a note on one assignment you already have planned. The useful test is whether a student can read it and tell you what they can use AI for and what they need to do themselves.
